SURFSIDE FOREST HOUSE

Nantucket, MA

CROSS-AXIAL MASTER WING ADDS A CENTER ENTRANCE AND RESPECTS A MAIN HOUSE FORM

Sited in a natural landscape of grassy meadows and diminutive, coastal pines, this special ‘upside-down’ house presents a modern version of the Old North Wharf shed - a local building type and workhorse of Nantucket’s former, working waterfront.  The upper level, Living-Dining room leads to a modest Roof Walk with exhilarating views to nearby Surfside Beach. Here, an IBM executive wanted to add a one-story, Master bedroom wing to establish a more gracious entry and give them a much-needed expansion of space. The design for a private porch off the Master Suite was eliminated to control cost.

Centrally located, a new entry porch adds a well-scaled, entry gesture - while inside, the Entry Foyer becomes the central link for the new, bi-nuclear floor plan.  To maintain a consistent DNA in terms of architectural character, the new roof pitch matches the pitch of the existing house.  The wing establishes a cross-axis to the taller house while anchoring the new composition in the landscape. Rose-supporting trellis frames mounted on the shingled sidewall continue up onto the roof, per local tradition, quietly knitting the house into the garden setting.
