ARBOR COURT HOUSE
Nantucket, MA
EXPANSIVE SUNSETS ENLIVEN STONE TERRACE BARBEQUES AT WEST END OF GARDEN COURT
Following a gentle rise from the entry gate to the driveway circle, one arrives at a high ground where a village-like cluster of building elements, situated in the rolling, terminal moraine, Dionis landscape, framing a central garden court.
The 3-bedroom house and 2-bedroom cottage first appear as a pair of one-story gabled ends which frame the centered entry. The gable on the Northside seems to anchor a taller structure, a classic, North Wharf shed, that re-orients in the plan, to capture an optimal view of Nantucket Sound – the calm waters, where the Native people first taught the Quaker settlers how to whale. To best enjoy these views, the Living-dining room and Kitchen are situated on the upper level of the so-called, ‘upside-down house’. The cozy, upper-level deck facing the Sound is an ideal place to enjoy a cocktail.
Within the court, a U-shaped, arbor trellis, supporting wisteria vines, provides shelter from the elements, sun shading - making a peaceful place to be. The trellis defines the entry route and leads to a stone terrace, that is well-situated for barbeques and outdoor dining for enjoying sunsets in the western sky.
The spacious, Master bedroom suite is located below the second floor Living, with other bedrooms situated at the quieter gabled ends. This village cluster of a house makes a sheltered, central “garden room” while affording broad views of the Sound and surrounding landscape.
