AMELIA
DRIVE RESIDENCES

Nantucket, MA

A PAIR OF GAMBREL BUILDING FORMS SHIFT, CREATING A CORNER, GARDEN COURT

When Nantucket planners extend the island street plan, local zoning sometimes extends the urban character of the historic village, as was the case on Amelia Drive. Here, a mixed-use program, combines commercial and residential uses within a single structure. In addition to two upper levels, there is a full basement level below

The design strategy - using the distinctive Gambrel roof form in reference to nearby, mid-island farmlands - reduces the scale of the bulky structure and staggered footprint, creating a private corner court, civic-mindedly softens the corner and produces an evocative play of intersecting Gambrel and dormer rooflines.
