SUNSET HILL HOUSE
Nantucket, MA
LOFTY SPACE WITH A SENSE-OF-OCCASION FOR GALLERY NIGHTS IS A QUIET, RETREAT BY DAY
This house serves as both a private, home retreat and flexible arts venue for an energetic, Modern art gallery owner whose busy, summer season takes first priority. The Living and Dining rooms form a single, continuous space with a combined footprint that may be used as an exhibition gallery for art openings and salon gatherings. Off-season, the house becomes more of a studio where the owner paints and arranges artworks for viewing, inside and outdoors. The lofty, South-facing Living room and tall windows, offer a grand sense of occasion and Daylighting design that maximizes sunlight in Winter.
Sitting on a hilltop, at the edge of town, the house and its surrounding natural garden draw the visitor into a private retreat for art appreciation. Looking West over the rolling, moraine landscape, the entry porch, trellised deck, and flower garden create a special place to enjoy dramatic, evening sunsets.
Entirely separate, a lower-level rental apartment with a private entry, faces a garden terrace to the South. The broad scale of this garden area is well-suited for various sculptures. The owner is astonished at how effortlessly the house design addresses this varied program while fitting into the natural, undulating site.
